Volunteer!
Your help is needed! Volunteers are an integral part of the City of San Jose!
Come volunteer—we have many opportunities, right in your neighborhood!

All volunteers must complete the City of San Jose
 Volunteer Service Agreement.
Those 17 years old and younger must also have a parent sign the Volunteer Service Agreement.


Community Centers
Community Centers are right in your neighborhood! With 10 major hubs throughout the City of San Jose, your help is needed, close to home! While each Community Center has their own unique volunteer needs, they are eager to have your help with:


Opportunities Include
  • Building and grounds (washing windows, cleaning and picking up litter)
  • Office work
  • Pre-school class prep work (cutting out shapes, preparing art projects, making copies)
  • Therapeutics
  • Youth Program: Coaches


Parks
San Jose has over 200 city parks! Everything in our parks keeps growing, so volunteers help is vital to enhancing the work of park staff. Volunteering in city parks is a healthy, outdoor activity, in the fresh air and sunshine!


  • Volunteers must be at least 6 years old.
  • High School “Community Service Hours” are awarded to Park Volunteers
  • All volunteers must complete a Volunteer Service Agreement     

Volunteers will typically:

  • Pick-up litter
  • Remove graffiti
  • Weed
  • Mulch
  • Weed and clean tree basins
  • Rake leaves
  • Trim bushes
  • Prune flowers/roses
  • Cut back suckers
  • Sweep walkways
  • Clean street gutters
  • Level DG
  • Eliminate cobwebs
  • Remove old tape
  • Remove staples
  • Wash picnic tables
  • Clean playground equipment
  • Clean exercise equipment
  • Wash/paint trash cans
  • Paint curbing
  • Improve park sign area                                          


Adopt-A-Park/Trail
The Adopt-A-Park (AAP) program is our long-term opportunity.
Interested volunteers can be individuals, families, friends, groups or neighbors.
Parks can be adopted by one or more entities, as there is always something to do!

  • When can I volunteer?  
    • Volunteers are welcome at the park when it is open: 8:00 AM to ½ hour after sunset
  • Tasks
    • Volunteers help with many different landscaping and maintenance tasks (see previous list)
  • Requirements
    • Individuals:
      • 8 hours of service per month
        1 year commitment
    • Groups:
      • 16 hours of service per month
      • 1 year commitment
  • Supplies
    • All materials are provided

One Day Volunteer Events


    • One Day Volunteer Events are typically done in 3-4 hours.
    • Generally, they run from 8:45 to 12:00 noon, any day of the week.
    • All supplies are provided—we simply need your time and muscle!
    • Call (408) 595-3483 to schedule a park clean-up event for your group!
      • Please allow a 4-week planning period.

Park volunteers cannot use power tools.
Park volunteers cannot use any chemicals, herbicides or pesticides.

Fingerprinting and a TB test are required for most volunteer positions.

To apply for a City of San Jose volunteer experience, please complete our Volunteer Service Agreement. After staff has reviewed the application, the volunteer office will contact you regarding next steps.
