Building Department of the Year Award
The California Building Officials (CALBO) association has honored the San José
Building Division with it's 2017-2018 Building Department of the Year award. CALBO noted the division's many accomplishments, including: an educational outreach program for local high schools and colleges; a trilingual Small Business Ally team to help small businesses succeed in the permit process; coordinating with the County in creating a Streamlined Restaurant Program; a time- and cost-saving Over-the-Counter permit program for homeowners; a time- and money-saving combination inspection program for new multifamily buildings; an efficient Coordinated Plan Review Program for commercial, industrial, and multifamily buildings; and a highly successful Special Tenant Improvement program in which all plan review staff coordinate on major building improvements proposed by businesses. The division also expanded its online permit service (sjpermits.org), and is fully implementing an Electronic Plan Review program that will save both customers and staff costs, time, paper, and energy. The division's goal is to deliver the best service possible for its many types of customers.
The Building Division oversees private construction to ensure safe buildings and to facilitate the City's economic development objectives. We accomplish this by ensuring compliance with building, electrical, mechanical, plumbing, zoning, engineering, energy, and accessibility codes and laws.
